Midland Counties Championship Show Critique

I was delighted, also taken aback with the large entry at the show. So many thanks to all the exhibitors for the time and effort you made to attend.
As always Deerhound people take decisions sportingly.
I thought there were many fine hounds on show today and some decisions were tight. The general consensus over the years has been the quality lies mainly in the bitches but I found the males to be of an equally high standard.
Thanks to my steward Richard for easing me through the day.

Minor Puppy Dog (5,0)

1st Peachs’ Kilbourne Shrike

Well reared, well schooled 7 month male. Well proportioned head with dark eye, although ears could be smaller. He has good bone and well knuckled feet. A good length of loin and gentle rise over topline. Reasonable width in hind quarters and good bend of stifle. Crisp coat and shown in immaculate condition. Moved best in class. B.P

2nd Taylors’ Ormanstar Gambling Man

Another quality puppy. Not the scope of the first but is well put together. Dark eye, well folded ear, straight front and good feet. Nice rise over topline and hind quarters are developing well in accordance with age. Two very promising youngsters.

3rd Jansons’ Nixophel Carnelian Red

Junior Dog (5,1)

1st Peaches’ Kilbourne LLloyd

A rangy 15 month hound. Handsome head with hazel eye. Standing he has an impressive  outline. Particularly like his strong well muscled neck which led into a well put together front with good feet. Still to fill in a bit in fore chest. Good spring of rib and well defined hind quarters but found him a little weak in stifle, this can improve in time. Crisp coat in excellent condition.

2nd Adams’ Ardneish Pinochio

Smaller but shapely dog with with good breed features. Lovely facial expression with dark eye and small ear. Little short in the neck but has a good front and also good in hind angulation. Overall is developing well and feel he just needs time. Rather unsettled today.

3rd Finnett and Heathcotes’ Hyndsight Timespace

Post Graduate Dog (7,1)

1st Baumans’ Packway Loxley Norton

Young hound with great potential. Standing he presents a classic Deerhound outline being curvy from head to tail. Masculine head with acceptable eye colour. He is well boned with good feet. Very deep in chest and a lovely sweep over loin. Well let down hocks and good width in hind quarters. He does need to tighten up in hind movement which can be achieved. If so in time he could be a top Deerhound. R.C.C

2nd Helps’ Beardswood Torran

A real quality well proportioned male shown in excellent muscular condition. He is a well angulated front and back. Good head shape, dark eye but ears could be smaller. Deep capacious chest with good top and underline. Immaculate presentation- true mover.

3rd Stuart and Holts’ Ollandsheart Abraham

Limit dog (4,0)

1st Girlings’ Plyfleet Timothy

I really liked this dog. There is a lot more to  him than first  meets the eye. When you get your hands on him you get the feel of a Deerhound that could really work. Tremendous hard condition. Good  head shape with reasonable eye colour. Good fore chest and straight front. Ribs well sprung and deep chest. Just would like to see more hind angulation. He was the best mover in class.

2nd Barrets’ Stranwith Flint

This dog has an exquisite head that would melt your heart. Good neck into a well put together front. Lovely deep chest and sweep over loin. He stands over good ground but he missed out on top spot on hind movement.

3rd McCombes’ Teviotdale Banner Blue

Open Dog (8,1)

1st Finnet and Heathcotes’ CH Hyndsight Desperado

Instantly eye catching dog in full maturity. Excels in head, neck and front. Deep chest, well sprung ribs with wide well muscled back end. Good bend of stifle and strong second thigh. A real picture standing and moved out with a real “look and me” attitude. CC and B.O.B

2nd Grimshaws’ Greyflax the Jazz Singer to Jamalison

Thought this dog was built on really nice lines. Refined head, deep chest and straight front. Could have more fore chest but has good flow over loin, good bend of stifle and good broad hind quarters. Stylish dog who deserved his place in a very strong class of males.

3rd Peachs’ CH Rubeus Hagrid to Kilbourne

Minor Puppy Bitch (11,2)

1st Peachs’ Ormanstar Queen of Hearts

Headed an interesting class of puppies. Sweet feminine head, dark eye, well knuckled feet, quite long cast. She has a good bend of stifle and low set hocks. Moved out with accuracy and precision for one so young.

2nd Hawkins’ Kaleginy Thistle at Kwaricot

Chunky 7month pup. Well off for the bone and has a soft expression and good fold of ear. Shapley hind quarters and low set hocks. Played her handler up a bit but I liked her spirit.

3rd Abbot and Constantines’ Kaleginy Magnolia

Junior Bitch (8,3)

1st McCombes’ Chuilinn Lacien

This bitch stood out in the class. Very strong hound with excellent harsh coat. Good head shape and strong neck. Plenty of fore chest and is well sprung in rib. Powerful hind legs. She moved around the ring with great ease. She needs to lose a few pounds in weight which would help her overall definition but I liked her a lot.

2nd Kilgars’ Ardneish Pacific at Maelstorm

Well muscled, stylish bitch with lovely gentle expression and small ears. Finer boned than 1st but has a good overall Deerhound shape with a good bend of stifle. Sound mover.

3rd Wilce Quinton and Quintons’ Kilbourne Marie at Kirjojax

Post Graduate Bitch (12,2)

1st Kilgars’ Claonaiglen Cona at Maelstrom

Striking dark bitch with an excellent crisp coat. Dark eye and neat folded ears. Decent fore chest, good return of upper arm and good feet. Long cast, with strong hind quarters. She was a bit flat on topline but overall a quality hound with good ring presence.

2nd Heaps’ Leoch Juniper of Fintalloch

Well balanced bitch who was a sound mover. She is built on nice lines with straight front and correct rise over her loin. Good width over thighs and adequate bend of stifle. Steady mover.

3rd Taylors’ Minerva McGonagall of Ormanstar

Limit Bitch

1st Peachs’ Blixten Star to Kilbourne

Well proportioned bitch without exaggeration. Lovely shape of head, hazel eye that could be slightly darker but  doesn’t take away from kind expression. Well folded ears, elegant neck, well placed shoulder, good depth of chest and strong in back end. Some deerhounds don’t look like they enjoy the show ring but this one does! Lovely mover. C.C

2nd McKinnons’ Claonaiglen Carron

I was really impressed by this bitch. Such a gentle expression. She was curvy throughout, deep in chest, powerful in hind legs and lovely low set hocks. She also looks like she could work in the field. A real credit to her owners. R.C.C

3rd Helps’ Beardswood Taisie

Open Bitch

1st Helps’ Beardswood Quintessence

Top quality bitch who is in her prime. Nothing to hide here. She is very graceful with an elegance throughout. Well made front and rear with gentle sweep over loin. I judged her as a puppy and admired her then and still do. The younger ones just edged it on the day.

2nd Adams’ IR CH Rosslyn Quicktime at Ardneish

Eye catching dark hound with good breed qualities. Dark eye, gentle expression and small ears. Straight front, strong in loin, deep chest and broad hind quarters. Her feet were not her fortune which detracted from what was otherwise a very good Deerhound.

3rd Finnett and Heathcotes’ CH Hyndsight Mandolin Wind
